The Story of Materials: From Earth to Adornment
Share
In my work, everything begins with materials. They are not just the building blocks of my jewelry - they are its soul, the quiet storytellers of each design.
Beads and textures are the foundation of both my jewelry and the VIKA brand philosophy - natural, slow, and deeply connected to the earth. When I step into a bead or craft store, I always walk past the sparkling crystals and polished perfection of modern jewelry materials. My eyes search for something different - something with history, character, and imperfection.
I’m drawn to rustic textures and wabi-sabi aesthetics - the beauty of things aged, weathered, and unrefined. Cracked ceramics, matte stones, hand-carved bone beads, unfinished wood. These materials speak to me of time and experience, of nature’s patience and resilience.

Choosing Natural Over Synthetic
Today, the world offers endless materials for jewelry-making - from glittering synthetic stones to perfectly uniform glass crystals. But for me, true beauty lies in what’s organic and real. Natural materials like wood, clay, bone, leather, and semi-precious stones have a presence that can’t be replicated.
I believe that natural materials carry energy. They hold warmth, imperfection, and a grounding essence that connects the wearer to something ancient and honest. When I hold a wooden bead, I think about the tree it came from - a small fragment of life that continues in a new form. A ceramic bead reminds me of earth and clay - the touch of soil shaped by fire into permanence.

My favorite materials - wood, clay, and semi-precious stones - feel alive to me. They hold a quiet power, a grounding energy that reminds us of our place in the natural world. In an age of mass production and digital noise, they bring balance and calm - a return to something elemental and true.
The Value of Old Things
Alongside natural materials, I’ve also developed a deep love for vintage beads. Old jewelry pieces found at flea markets often carry stories that time has softened but never erased. Some of these beads are hand-carved bone, aged wood, or early glass - small artworks from another era.
Repurposing these materials feels meaningful to me. It’s both an act of sustainability and of respect - giving new life to something already beautiful. In a world overwhelmed by fast fashion and disposable design, reusing vintage beads reminds me that craftsmanship and history should never be wasted.
Each old bead I choose holds a mystery. I’ll never know who wore it before or where it came from, but by weaving it into a new design, I allow its story to continue.

Sustainability as a Creative Philosophy
For me, sustainability is not just a concept - it’s a creative way of thinking. I believe in using what we already have, making less but making better, and choosing materials that age gracefully. Natural and repurposed materials aren’t just environmentally friendly, they’re soulful.
Each bead, cord, or stone is handled with care, chosen for its texture and harmony with the rest of the design. I never rush the process, because true craftsmanship takes time - and time gives meaning.

The Symbolism of Materials
Each natural material carries its own story and energy. Here’s what they represent to me:
- Wood: Organic and alive - a fragment of a tree, symbolizing life and renewal.
- Ceramic / Clay: Earth itself, shaped by hand and fire - a symbol of grounding and creation.
- Seed: A natural form of purity and potential - the essence of new beginnings.
- Bone / Horn: Strength, endurance, and a deep connection to ancestry.
- Glass: A symbol of artistry and craftsmanship - capable of endless forms, colors, and textures.
- Leather: Primal and flexible - a timeless material that connects us to tribal roots and authenticity.
- Stones (Agate, Jasper): Formed deep within the earth over time - each unique, grounding, and protective.
Closing Thoughts
I believe materials have voices. Some whisper softly, others speak loudly - but all of them tell stories if you listen. My role as a maker is to translate those stories into jewelry that feels alive, meaningful, and timeless.
When you wear a piece of VIKA jewelry, you’re not just wearing an accessory - you’re wearing a fragment of nature, a continuation of history, and a reflection of what it means to create with care.
